Privacy Office
The UC Berkeley Privacy Office assists the UC Berkeley community in maintaining its commitment to protecting the privacy rights of students, faculty, staff and members of the public. The Privacy Office can provide support and consulting services to UC Berkeley researchers as they engage in research projects involving personal or identifiable data, to ensure that project protocols and related contracts comply with campus privacy policies as well as state, federal and international privacy laws and regulations, including, but not limited to, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Examples of Privacy Office Services for Researchers:
- Assist in the negotiation of privacy-related contract terms with external organizations
- Provision of consulting services around best practices for safeguarding research data
- Assistance with de-identification protocols
